Short-rotation forestry with hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L.×P. tremuloides Michx.) in Northern Europe

چکیده
This review summarises the knowledge about the ecology, breeding and management of hybrid aspen (Populus wettsteinii Hämet-Ahti P. tremula L. P. tremuloides Michx.). The review is restricted mainly to Northern Europe, where hybrid aspen has been most intensively studied and cultivated and where it has proved to be one of the fastest-growing hardwoods, suitable for the production of pulpand energy-wood using the principles of short-rotation forestry. During recent decades over 4500 ha have been cultivated with hybrid aspen in the region. A number of research articles and domestic project reports involving hybrid aspen have been published, providing the basis for this review. Breeding has resulted in clones with high productivity and improved resistance to pests and diseases. Thus, hybrid aspen has fulfilled the preconditions for becoming an economically valuable hardwood in Northern Europe. Hybrid aspen plantations can be established on abandoned agricultural land, on forest land, and for the reclamation of exhausted surface mines. However, fast growth rate occurs only in fertile sites with good nutritional and hydrophysical properties. An increased area of Populus plantations on forest or agricultural land can have both positive and negative impacts on biodiversity, depending on landscape context, management activities and considered organisms. Further studies are needed concerning silviculture, site-growth relations, stability of clones, environmental and biodiversity impacts in large-scale plantations at various sites and adaptation of hybrid aspen to climate change.

Can Physiological and Anatomical Characters Be Used for Selecting High Yielding Hybrid Aspen Clones?
Stomatal, CO2 exchange parameters and several leaf and growth traits were recorded in a fi ve-year-old hybrid aspen clone trial. The fi eld trial consisted of four aspen hybrid clones (Populus tremula L. × P. tremuloides Michx.) and one local Populus tremula seedling source. The mean estimated height of hybrid aspen clones was 1.6 times higher than for P. tremula. Similarly, basal diameter was ...

Concentrations of cellulose, lignin and nutrients in the stemwood of four clones of 7-year-old hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. x P. tremuloides Michx.) were studied on 50 permanent experimental plots established for the afforestation of abandoned agricultural lands in Estonia. Quantitative evaluation of hybrid aspen chemical components indicated a relatively high cellulose and low acid-insolub...

Saplings of six Finnish hybrid aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx. x P. tremula L.) clones were exposed to 0, 50, 100 and 150 ppb ozone (O3) for 32 days in a chamber experiment to determine differences in O3 sensitivity among genotypes. Based on the chamber experiment, three clones with intermediate sensitivity to O3 were selected for a free-air O3 enrichment experiment in which plants were expos...

Juvenile growth and bud set phenology were analyzed to study the biological basis of heterosis (hybrid vigor) in interspecific hybrids of Populus tremuloides Michx. (T) and P. tremula L. (Ta). Growth, measured as seedling volume index, was significantly higher for each of the two reciprocal interspecific crosses, T x Ta and Ta x T, than for the T x T intraspecific cross. Broad-sense heritabilit...
متن کاملIntraspecific variation in root and leaf traits and leaf-root trait linkages in eight aspen demes (Populus tremula and P. tremuloides)
Leaf and fine root morphology and physiology have been found to vary considerably among tree species, but not much is known about intraspecific variation in root traits and their relatedness to leaf traits. Various aspen progenies (Populus tremula and P. tremuloides) with different growth performance are used in short-rotation forestry. Hence, a better understanding of the link between root tra...
